Origins of the Valentine

Saint Valentine is known as the patron saint of love. An Italian doctor turned priest that was imprisoned for performing weddings at a time when new marriages were outlawed in Ancient Rome.

The powers that be would spare his life only if he would renounce his faith. The story goes, that before he was led away to be killed, he sent a note to his jailer’s daughter with whom he was in love. He signed it, your Valentine. They say that was how the tradition of sending Valentine’s Day cards began.
