The History of the Purse

The Iceman, Ötzi, who was discovered in the Otztal Alps in 1991 (border of Austria and Italy) was found with a pouch. It is the oldest known bag. It dates back over 5,000 years.

The pouch was a vital part of life back then. This was the time of the hunters. Things were not accessible as they are today. These hunting or gathering trips were for an extended period of time. It was necessary to be prepared. The pouch and its contents were every bit as essential as their weapons.

Yes, throughout the centuries, men carried pouches just as women did. Pockets were not created until the 17th century. This did provide men and women with the ability to lose the bag if they so chose. More so the men. Let’s face it, us women carry our lives with us in our handbags!

I found the history of the handbag much more interesting than I thought it would be. I hope you enjoy the pictures and articles as much as I did.
